Area Director Electronic Newsletter
Welcome to the December 19, 2007 issue of the
Area 6 electronic newsletter. The electronic newsletter is designed
to facilitate communication between members of your NYSSBA Board of
Directors and the Areas they represent. The newsletter contains information
about Area 6 and NYSSBA. I hope you find it informative. I
would appreciate your sending comments and suggestions for future
newsletters to me at area6director@nyssba.org.
If any of your board colleagues do not have computer access, a copy will be
sent to the district office for distribution. If others with email did not
receive their own copy, please submit their e-mail address to NYSSBA at info@nyssba.org.
It was wonderful to see
so many people at Crickets in Peru in November. The presentations
were exciting and informative. The January and March meetings, I'm
sure, will be just as informative. Thanx to all those responsible for
them.
Janet Richards and her fellow Franklin County School Board members enjoyed
Regent Dawson's and Tim Kremer's presentations in Malone in October.
It's always good to gather to get to know each other and to exchange
information.
The 2007 Convention is over, but the benefits to all who attended will
continue throughout the year. Next year's convention in NYC will
continue the fine tradition. The Board of Directors and the Staff
will be working hard to establish a convention venue schedule for future
years based on the feedback we have received in the surveys and in general
conversations. Your comments are welcomed. Thank-you.
More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
The SLLCSBA missed their annual dinner meeting in December with Regent
Dawson due to the weather. However, there are plans for a March 1
Legislative Breakfast. More information will be distributed
after the first of the year.
A bus has been arranged by SLLCSBA to go to next year's convention in
NYC. Anyone in the Northcountry will be able to ride with us if it is
convenient for you. We will be leaving on Thursday morning and
leaving NYC Sunday morning to return home. We leave and return to the
BOCES Offices in Canton, NY. The cost is very reasonable and the
whole trip is convenient and worry-free. Plan to go with us next
year.
Your Area Director is still interested in knowing who might be available
for committees and upcoming NYSSBA. We are always looking for
volunteers to step up to help out and respresent your fellow
colleagues. We are also interested in knowing of programs and
initiatives your board may be proud to share so that we can publish it in
On Board and possibly share it with other boards at presentations.
There are a lot of great things happening throughout the Northcountry
during the year. We want others to know and sharing is the best way
to do that. Give me a call at: 315-388-5585 or email me at: dlsmith45@earthlink.net. Be
sure you let me know that you want to be in my address book so we can
exchange emails.
Happy Holidays to one and all and the very best wishes for a safe and
productive New Year.
Dana
Board
of Directors Retreat
The NYSSBA Board of Directors met recently for a day-and-a-half retreat,
facilitated by John LaRocca of the Rensselaerville Institute, to discuss
NYSSBA’s vision, mission and goals for the next two years.
Lighthouse
Project
The NYSSBA Board approved NYSSBA’s participation in the Iowa Association of
School Boards Multi-State Lighthouse Project, which focuses on the role of
local school boards and superintendents in creating conditions that lead to
higher student achievement. Look for more information in the near
future.
Convention
New York City will be the NYSSBA convention site for 2008, 2009 and
2010. NYSSBA staff will develop a convention site rotation schedule
for 2011 and beyond.
Legislative
Priorities
The Board approved the 2008 legislative priorities, which include
foundation funding sustainability, improving teacher quality, maximizing
resources, student testing improvements and supporting local education
democracy.
2008
Committee and Task Force Assignments
The 2008 task force and committees were reviewed. Charges will be
discussed by incoming president Wayne Schlifke and executive director Tim
Kremer and presented at the next Board meeting in February, 2008.
National
School Foundation Association
NYSSBA will soon become a member of the National School Foundation
Association. As a member of this foundation, NYSSBA staff will
receive training in the NSFA Foundation Management Training Certificate
Program, which entitles NYSSBA to offer the program to members whose
districts have or are contemplating creation of a school foundation.
NYSSBA would also be able to participate as a delegate to the National
Advisory Council, receive assistance in developing a state foundation
association and increase the value of a NYSSBA membership.
AdvisorySolutions
Due to the success this past year of AdvisorySolutions, the Board has
approved the continuation and further development of the AdvisorySolutions
consulting program.
